What should I install on my new computer and why?

I know, big question and it depends, but here is my situation:

1) I'm relatively new to computers... only 1-2 years.
2) I've only used windows 98
3) My computer always has issues... not sure if its me or Windows.

So, as far as a learning curve, getting used to the OS, and just being able to use the computer "bettter", etc.
Which should I install?

Please give some advice and reasons for both... or maybe since this is the unix thread... maybe pros/cons for a unix OS.

I would like to get an idea of what I should expect from using unix, even thought I know very little about it.

thanks

I have used it for a week now. If your used to windows, there are some things that way seem weird, but even I have figured out the freedom of customizability with Linux (Fedora Core 1)
Another pro is that it is free. Easily avalible, and there is variety. I am glad a satisfied my curiosity, mind you, I have come across a couple of issues on the way, but to be honest, i like fixing stuff anyways...

it all depends on your preference. i like both and use them for different things. linux is free...well windows can also be free. if you are curious as to linux why not try a livecd, or just install win then install linux afterwards making a dualboot machine. one thing to consider is if you have only 1 pc and are using dialup, you can run into problems getting a winmodem to work.

<Smile>.... I feel everyone is speaking greek to me

All these "terms"... I guess they are names or types of unix?

Maybe I should start at the "Beginners" section. Anyone give a "QUICK" beginners course or is it not that easy.

Maybe a least a website?

thanks

PS. FREE is sounding very cool !

Basically, you have to start with what do you WANT to DO with your new computer... Are you willing/wanting to LEARN or do you want to turn it on and have it "work" like windoze . . .

What hardware do you have? If your camera/scanner/printer, etc wont run with linux, then you are stuck with buying new or running an OS that will work with them...

If you have a NEW computer though, then your stuff should still work with the OLD computer...

see : http://www.linux.org/lessons/beginner/toc.html for one beginners section...

Will you be using Windows at work? Will you need it to commune with the host of Microsoft Zombies that don't know better? Is this system just to play learn and have Fun?

If you have to use Windows to get a long with the evil hordes of Microsoft, I would suggest using a dual boot system, learn about Linux and maybe you can get to the point of getting rid of Microsoft completely.
